11th Hour Racing Team earn victory with average points redress awarded

The World Sailing International Jury followed the guidelines set out in the Racing Rules of Sailing in awarding redress of 4 points to 11th Hour Racing Team.

The rules of the sport of sailing are quite clear around when a team is entitled to redress and there is ample precedent for a decision like this.

11th Hour Racing Team earned 4 points of redress for leg 7 - an average based on their results across all the legs in the race to date - which returned them to the top of the leaderboard to win The Ocean Race.

The Chairman of the World Sailing International Jury, Andrés Pérez, said it was a straightforward decision. “We basically used the Racing Rules of World Sailing. It’s a standard procedure, which is to award average points based on 11th Hour’s performance in the previous legs of the race.”

Earlier, the International Jury dismissed a protest by Team Holcim-PRB over the conduct of 11th Hour Racing Team in the original incident.

Skipper of Team Holcim-PRB, Benjamin Schwartz, was gracious in defeat: “We fully accept this outcome and congratulations to 11th Hour Racing Team for winning this race. They made a great race around the world and they deserve it. Unfortunately we had to play the race out in front of the Jury here, but it doesn’t remove anything from their win.”

The decisions from the International Jury are available below.
